Audrey Yap Su Ming
Audrey Yap is the managing partner of intellectual property (“IP”) specialist and commercial law firm, Yusarn Audrey. Known as one of Singapore’s outstanding IP experts, Audrey has an international reputation, and has received numerous awards for her role in shaping IP portfolios of companies and industries for value and monetisation, and advising countries on IP policies.
Audrey is a qualified lawyer in Singapore and Malaysia, a solicitor of England and Wales, a registered patent agent in Singapore and a Notary Public. Yusarn Audrey has offices in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia and collaboration partner offices in Europe.
In 2018, Audrey was named Asia Law’s Market Leading lawyer for IP and in World Trademark Reporter as one of Singapore’s Leading Trademark Professionals. Audrey is the only lawyer in Singapore who has been named one of the World’s Leading IP Strategists for 10 years consecutively in a London based survey conducted by IAM magazine from 2009 till 2018. Audrey’s past accolades include being listed as one of Singapore’s leading lawyers in Who’s Who Legal and one of the top Women Business lawyers in Singapore by Euromoney.
Audrey is a Board Member of Enterprise Singapore, Ministry of Trade and Industry Singapore; a Member of the Board of Directors, IP Office of Singapore, an Adjunct Fellow with the IP Academy of Singapore and Director of IPOS International, a subsidiary of IPOS.
Audrey was regional consultant for the World Intellectual Property Organisation (“WIPO”), a UN specialised agency from 2004-2006 to look at harnessing IP for growth for ASEAN. Audrey was selected by WIPO to serve on a high level expert panel in 2015 on International Technology Transfer in Geneva under the WIPO Development Agenda framework.
In 2012, Audrey served on the IPOS Steering Committee on a National IP Competency Framework as well as on the IP Sub Committee on “Developing a vibrant market place for IP transactions and commercialisation” for the purpose of the IP Hub Master Plan for Singapore, launched in March 2013.
She is the Chairman of the SMEC Innovation Committee, Singapore Business Federation(SBF), a Council Member of the Workforce Advancement Federation (WAF), and Legal Advisor to the Franchise & License Association (FLA).
Experience / Areas of Practice
Audrey’s area of practice includes advising her clients on Intellectual Capital management and aligning a company’s IP portfolio with its commercialisation strategy; advising on the management, protection and enforcement of all intellectual property rights including patents, trademarks, industrial designs and copyright; intellectual property licensing, franchising, technology transfer, securitization of IP assets and crafting of appropriate IP policies. She also files and prosecutes patent, trademark and industrial design applications both nationally and internationally.
Audrey has acted for a variety of local and foreign companies and institutions including listed and private companies, multi-national corporations, government linked companies, hospitals, research institutes, pharmaceutical and medical apparatus companies, large public cooperatives, technology companies, venture capitalists, foreign and local law firms and individuals.
Audrey was invited as guest speaker for seminars organized by various local institutions and organizations such as the International Enterprise Singapore (IE Singapore), the Housing and Development Board (HDB), the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES), the NUS Engineering Faculty, Singapore Society for Microbiology, Biotechnology and Centre for Life Sciences & Chemical Technology, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Licensing Executives Society (Singapore) and the Franchising And Licensing Association Singapore (FLA).
